BORDERS Startup Advances to Semi-Finals in AZ Innovation Challenge

Discern Science, a startup founded by BORDERS researchers at the University of Arizona, has been selected as a semifinalist for the Spring 2012 Arizona Innovation Challenge. The Arizona Innovation Challenge invests in technology businesses in the state that have the potential to spur economic transformation through wealth and job creation.  BORDERS is a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Center of Excellence headquartered at the University of Arizona.

Discern Science is the latest startup company to emerge from federally funded research conducted at BORDERS. Launched in 2011 by Drs. Jay F. Nunamaker and Aaron C. Elkins, Discern Science focuses on commercializing the AVATAR system. The AVATAR provides non-contact and automated interviewing of passengers or entrants in secure environments such as the border or airport.

If Discern Science wins the Arizona Innovation Challenge, the funding will be used to further the commercialization of the AVATAR by transitioning the laboratory and field tested technology into operational environments.
